I needed a ride on Sunday afternoon. The weather was perfect and the week before had been an atmospheric swamp. Ben was the only guy who responded to my email, and he wanted to go someplace new. Someplace new that was a 40 minute drive. I wanted a 15 minute drive. Ben frequently goes where I suggest though, and I did want to try this park, so I stopped whining, kitted up, and drove over to his house, from whence we carpooled. Forty minutes later we pulled into the parking lot of the Nassahegan Sports Complex, bordering the eponymous state park.
There was one other mtber in the parking lot, and he tipped us off on the trails to ride. I didn’t listen much, and figuring that Ben is faster then me so he’d be in front anyway, so there was no need for me to know where I was going.
George Waldo, the park I ride most frequently, has a long Strava segment called The Schralpin’ Turns. It’s twisty and turny and flowey and the most fun half a mile in the park. Riding Nassahegan was like riding The Schralpin’ Turns for 7 miles. I’ve never had so much fun on a trail as at Nassahegan. And we only did about half the trails there and in the adjoining preserve, Sessions Woods.
I need to listen to Ben more often.
